Have you ever tried taking a self portrait? With serious face? Better yet, with a laughing face? I just did. It was hard! Seriously harder than I had expected!

Besides the obvious how-to-focus/set-the-timer/run-back-and-forth-trying-to-determine-just-how-to-hold-my-head-and-body-to-look-best (for the record I *really* need to get a remote trigger if I plan on attempting this again...), just playing with the *idea* of taking my own picture took a little time to get used to. 'Cause I'm really bad at having my picture taken (ask my husband and he'll use a few words worse than "bad" like "annoying", "ridiculous", "difficult", etc.... and he's totally right). I tend to avoid it like the plague.

It recently dawned on me when my daughter was assigned a preschool project that involved finding a family picture how BAD I am at actually being in and taking candid photos of our family. The most recent I could find for her that had all the members of our family was either Christmas 2010, Easter 2009, or a trip to Big Game Alaska from two years ago when a random tourist asked me to take her picture then offered to do the same for me.

So. Here I am with a eleventy-billion pictures of my adorable kids, a couple million of my hubby and three of me. Three. I need to do something about that.

In addition to the family picture thing, I *really* needed to do something about the horrid head shot of myself on my website. (By the way, have you noticed my new website?! Totally new. Totally awesome. Go check it out then come back and finish reading. Or finish reading then go check it out. Either way, check it out. Please. I put in a ton of hours and am really proud of it. AND it has fun photos of me in the "about me" section that I took myself).

I'm getting off track.

I had a ridiculous picture of myself that I'd been using as a head shot for a while. I'd begged my hubby to come press the shutter a few times (a job he's not that fond of) so I could have something half way decent a while ago. It was OK(ish). Actually, I'm lying. It embarrassed me.

This is what happens when I get my picture taken: (this is *not* the one that I had been using for my head shot, but it was almost as bad;) )

Seriously NOT GOOD at being on that side of the camera.

Blah. Point of all of this? It's more than just a picture. It's putting myself out there in a way I never have. It's looking at myself in a way I never have. It's defining me and accepting me in a way that I never have before. I'm not perfect, I'm not gorgeous, I'm not a lot of things. But I am me. And I'm OK with that. In fact, I like me (don't my girls have a book with that title?!)

I finally went for it. I took my own picture. And I was determined to get some images that I wouldn't be embarrassed of. I hadn't really planned on it - in fact the only reason I did it this particular day is because I happened to think of it while I was doing my hair (something I haven't done often in recent memory) in the morning and I *really* didn't want that crazy embarrassing picture on my new website.

The kids were occupied with their daddy, so I snuck (sneaked?) downstairs and I did it. I took about 20 minutes, and I felt like a complete fool (do you know how hard it is to get yourself to laugh?!) but I did it! And it worked! I actually like them! and I posted them on my website in the "about me" section. (Did you check it out yet?)

OK, without further ado. The results of my crazy self-portrait session (I should clarify -- the KEEPERS of my crazy self-portrait session) Ta daaaaaaaa!!!

Done. I'm not even embarrassed at the fake laughing one (didn't know I was faking it, did you?!)

Oh, and since this blog post is all about me, me, me.... some Suzie facts.

~ I pretty much never have a completely clean house
~ I have a cake problem (as in, if there's cake in the house, it's not going to last long)
~ My favorite pet ever was a mini weiner dog with no teeth named Star.
~ I let my kids watch too much TV
~ I lived in Alaska for 8 years and honestly miss it from time to time (sometimes it's just the brag factor that I miss -- that I survived at 50 below...yada yada...)
~ I spent 31 days of my life (college life) in the backcountry of Alaska without showering
~ I'd rather stay in and watch a movie with my hubby than leave the house
~ I secretly want another kid, but I don't think I can deal with having a newborn again. I wasn't the best at it.

I do have a point with all this blabbering, if you were wondering. My point is that we all need to get ourselves in front of the camera more. Chances are, if you're reading this blog, you're a mom who is interested in photography, or you at least enjoy looking at pretty pictures. And chances are that you're always the one carrying the camera around capturing moments of your family at special times. But how often do you hand that camera off to a person standing next to you at the carousel to snap a pic of you and your kids? How often do you turn on that fancy little timer, prop the camera up on a shelf and snap a few silly shots of everyone wrestling in the living room after dinner? How often do you put yourself in front of the camera so that years from now your kids will have a full sense of what life was like back then?

The answer is probably "not that often". That's my answer. So I vow to do it more. And I think you should, too.

Say it with me: "I am me. And I'm OK with that. In fact, I like me."

What a breath of fresh air! Chris of Christopher Rebo Photography invited me to go out on a shoot a few days ago with a couple of beautiful and willing models and his friend Tony from PictureFilm (rumor has it that a video of our afternoon will be available for viewing at some point in the near future).

Can't say as the weather was the greatest, but we found some fun opportunities for unique portraits. Not only was it refreshing to get into downtown Helena and do something different, but I took the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and really reach for a more gritty, urban feel. I think it worked. I was channeling my inner senior photographer ;) Need to get my lens on more people in this genre. Tons of fun!

(Hint, hint! Know any seniors who still need their portraits done for the class of 2012? Those of you in the class of 2013 -- thinking ahead yet?? Drop a note and let me know what you're thinking!)

Since this wasn't a client session, I took the opportunity to really play around with my post processing as well. Lots of different stuff here.

I think these ones deserve to be shown off a little larger than what I usually put on the blog. Enjoy!

Zoe is 3! | Helena Montana Child Photographer

You know every mom says it on a regular basis: We don't know where the time goes. Days drag by, bedtime never comes soon enough, and if you wipe another butt you're going to LOSE YOUR CRAP. (No pun intended there. Ooops). But then you wake up one morning and realize that months, if not years, have passed before your eyes. You blinked and all of a sudden your wiggly chubby baby has turned into a longer, skinnier talking version of the tiny being you could swear you just gave birth to the other day. Between the dishes, the laundry, the poop, the messes, the toys and the routine, our babies grow up. Right before our eyes.

I'll always refer to Zoe as my baby -- she *is* my baby. But she's turning three in a couple weeks. My baby is turning three. She tells me all the time that since she's turning three, she gets to take piano lessons (like her big sister) and go to school (like her big sister) and make her own toast in the morning (like her big sister). But she's my baby. I just want to hold her in my lap for a while longer -- to brush her teeth for her, to make her breakfast for her, rather than her doing it by herself. It's flown. The days, the months, the years. They've all flown by and I *HAVE* to remind myself to slow down and watch it happen. With my eyes. Not always with my camera lens. Note to self..........

Since I can't stop time, I'll graciously celebrate her birthday. I'll make her minnie mouse cake just as she requested, and we'll invite her friends and play and have fun and look forward to another year. Because that's what we do. We're glad they grow up and become their own little people and carve out a path in life. We're happy for them. We nurture them, we love them, we guide them, then we let them go. Right? That part scares me. But there's no sense getting ahead of myself, right? I have a good 15 years to prepare for that part. A long, slow 15 years, please.

Happy birthday, baby Zoe. Mama loves you to the moon. And back. And then some.

Zoe's proudest accomplishments on the cusp of her third birthday:

~ giving up the paci with no complaints (the paci fairy had to come to our house and *trade* the paci for a rainbow dash toy... details)
~ going potty all by herself
~ making her own toast in the morning

I had the unique opportunity to spend some time with a very special couple recently who are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. I eagerly looked around for inspiration for this session since I generally spend my time with kids and families, and needed some idea of what direction I wanted to go. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that having spent so much time together, there have to be many stories to tell, many memories living between them. That's what I wanted to capture.

So I went to this session with an open plan -- I knew I wanted to see what made them "them", but I also wanted to really try to show the love and the history that they have shared over the years.

We spent about two and a half hours together. I probably could have spent all day. What we came away with are images that I hope they and their family cherish for many years to come. I know they were a bit nervous, afraid they weren't photogenic and a little awkward in front of the camera, but I think we got past that. In fact, I know we did.

I'm looking forward to getting through all the images and making a keepsake album from our morning together.

I recently finished up another set of holiday mini sessions and am working feverishly on proofs so everyone can choose their images and cards in time for Christmas. This time we were out at Reeder's Alley, and all four of the families who braved the crisp day will be pleasantly rewarded when they get their proofs - promise! (I usually say that clients will receive about 10 images from mini sessions. I think the smallest gallery I've put up so far has 24 images! Sweet!

I've been posting some sneak peeks up on my facebook page as usual, but since I know this little guy's mom doesn't use facebook (how DOES she survive?! -- wink, wink), I just have to post this one image here now.

I always learn something new every time I go out with a client. Always. This time, it was to not be deterred by the weather, and be sure to have a backup plan. The wind was blowing steadily at 20 mph this afternoon. I got to our location (outdoors, field next to a lake...) a few minutes early and knew there was no way the kids would be able to handle the cold, and that the wind would really detract from the faces in the images. A quick new plan led us to a new location for the first half of the session, nice and sheltered from the wind, then we headed back to the original location after the wind had subsided just in time for some beautiful light before sunset.

Aaaaahhhhhh..... A year or so ago, I probably would have just cancelled. I'm so glad we didn't. As usual, this last session is my new favorite. A beautiful family who really had a good time in front of the camera and weren't afraid to be themselves. That always helps the final images really turn into something to treasure.

And the best part about this family? They booked two sessions -- one now and one this winter. I can't wait to see them again in a beautiful winter wonderland!

Meet Jackson, a wonderfully perfect little guy who, at four weeks, slept better than most of the newborn babies I have photographed so far! I usually schedule newborn sessions within the first 10 days after birth, but due to Jackson being born a couple weeks early, and me being sick, this was as soon as we were able to get together. Must be it was meant to be, because each image I came to was sweeter than the last.

Welcome to the world, buddy! I look forward to watching you grow (and getting to know your mama better!)

I am totally one of *those* people who LOVES winter. I was as giddy as my girls (two and four) last night as the snow started falling, and I couldn't help myself this morning when I looked outside at the sun rising over the Elkhorn mountains making my whole world sparkle. I had to take my camera out! I am so lucky to live in this little piece of heaven. All these images were taken out my front door, still in my pajamas.... Mmmmmmm, I love it! (Disclaimer: don't call me in April asking me if I still feel the same way. Chances are slim).

I'm so excited to share these images from a stunning wedding this summer at Chico Hot Springs in Pray, Montana. I had the incredible opportunity to back up Bärbel Morton of Bärbel Morton Photography. I learned a lot and had a wonderful time.

The bride and groom selected Montana as the location for their destination wedding, and gave their friends and family from Los Angeles quite an experience! Everyone was treated to a beautiful, windy Montana day with fantastic views, beautiful vows from beautiful people, and a day no one will forget.

I don't often include my own kiddos on my blog, but I can't resist sharing these. I got them out recently (before it got WAY too cold for short sleeved dresses) to capture some images to use on our Christmas cards this year. They did really well (in-between shivers). It's nice to have them growing up a little bit - although if I had it my way, they'd stop right now!) - so I don't have to bribe them too much, or use too many tricks. Maybe at this point in the game they're just used to it.

What to Wear - Fall/Winter Family Portraits | Helena, Montana Family Photographer

I've got a lot of mini sessions coming up with families who keep asking me what they should wear! We face a bit more of a challenge here in Montana dressing for outdoor fall and winter photos than someone in, say, Texas or Georgia, that's for sure. But then again, given that we ARE Montanans, I am convinced that we can accept the challenge and make it awesome.

What this means to you as you sit there staring into your kids' closets wondering if you're going to have to drop a small fortune on clothing before you even get to your session (quick answer: no, you're not): You're going to have to work a little, but the effort will be totally worth it years from now when you look at these photos on the wall, a tear comes to your eye and you think to yourself "Wow, fall and winter in Montana are so gorgeous, and I'm so glad we got out there and took that picture. I can't believe the kids were ever really that little. Look how they're holding hands. Look how my hubby is holding *my* hand. Look how we're all laughing and smiling and loving life. That was a memory worth making."

Just a couple rules:

-You will not show up in your ski and/or hunting gear bundled so that only your nose and eyes are showing (unless, of course, I'm going on location with you and the whole point is to capture you and your family doing what you love to do....)

-You will not all show up matching. Please, for goodness sakes, do not match. There's a fine line between matching and coordinating. We're aiming for coordinating. (If you haven't heard me say it before, do NOT and I mean DO NOT show up to our session wearing all jeans or khakis and matching white collared [or any color for that matter] shirt. I'll tell you to go home and try again. For real.)

-You will not spend an arm and a leg on brand new clothes just to look good for your family pictures.

-You will accessorize (that means heels for you, mamas!) are awesome. Jewelry, scarves, hats, shoes... Go for it! This is your chance to dig out all that stuff you bought before you had kids then stuffed into a drawer somewhere.

So how's it work? Start small. Choose one person's outfit first, then everyone else's based on that choice using a palate of two or three colors (you can always use black and white as *free* choices).

Make sense?

Some samples from my fashion-savvy family clients:

Love these choices for winter pictures. Very festive, but they don't *scream* MERRY CHRISTMAS at you. Red, blue and gray.

More from the red/blue/gray families (dad took off the sweater for most of the shots, but I love the extra splash it adds here)

OK, so this doesn't help with what to wear in the winter, but it's a great example of taking the jeans/white shirts up a notch. Or twelve. You could totally do this with sweaters and tights added in, hats and chunky scarves.... Seeing it yet??

Remember when we started I said to choose one person's outfit first, then everyone else's based on that? (It's OK, you can go back and re-read it.....) Three guesses who this family chose first. And this also proves that you don't need to be afraid of patterns. Just put the pattern on one person and pull colors from it for everyone else.

OK, again, this isn't necessarly helping with what to wear to be warm, but those colors are AWESEOME.

Blues and purples! Love it!

Oh, yay, more blues and purples!!! (Little brag here - these aren't my photos, but they're my family. I actually hired a photographer (special thanks again to Jeffrey Foote Photography) to take my own family photos last year when my grammie turned 90. We surprised her with a birthday party and all her grandkids in one place at one time. I told everyone to wear blues, purples and grays. It worked - even from long distance).

And just check out those peacoats (from Old Navy) and tights and boots on my babies! They totally stayed warm and looked adodrable all at the same time. Anything is possible!

OK, so to recap.

1. Don't match, coordinate.

2. Choose an outfit that you love for one person first, and base everything else on that.

3. Use a palate of 2 or 3 colors to start with, and fill in with black/white.

4. Accessorize.

5. Do not wear your ski or hunting gear. Unless it's ONLY for warming up inbetween. That's TOTALLY fine (as is hot chocolate. For me or your kids. Whatever).

As I'm sure you know, I have a special place in my heart for sisters. Especially sisters who are just about two years apart. Meet K&J -- two adorable little cuties celebrating their first and third birthdays within days of each other. They traveled from Butte to come see me for their birthday photos. I must say they gave me a run for my money -- they totally made me work for it! But it was awesome, and they're beautiful and I'm so happy with how the images turned out. I quickly gave up on the "is there a bug on my head????!!!!" to get them to look my way, and instead followed them around (a million miles an hour!) just snapping away and capturing *them* being *them*.

Happy birthday, girls!

Well, this past Sunday was a popular day for photos! I met Sylar and his Mama at Reeders Alley for his birthday session, and we ran into three other groups there doing photos as well! It's such a gem - so many great little spots for wonderful backdrops. Can't wait to do my family mini sessions there later this fall!

When I first started thinking about this session, I knew I wanted to have a few props. I generally don't do many props at all, but this little guy and this location... the antique typewriter all but jumped off the shelf at me when I was perusing the antique shop last week! ...as did the phone, the tractor, the old coffee cans and books... And I have to admit - as cute as those shots were, I still just absolutely adore shots of him being himself.

Another of my baby's first years comes to an end! I love having all these birthday kiddos this summer - it's so fun to watch them grow up and capture such special memories for their families.

The story from this session: The cake smash that wasn't. Cutest cake ever -- a 4 1/2" tall pink and purple panda bear sitting on top of a purple cake covered with balloons. Couldn't get her to touch it with a ten-foot pole! Oh, and the balloons... Who wants balloons when there is a perfectly exciting chunk of wood to check out?! Love this kid. Thank you, mom & dad, for allowing me to participate in this year with you guys!

I recently spent a beautiful evening with a beautiful Shepherd High senior! We met in the middle (Shepherd is outside of Billings!) in Bozeman for a beautiful evening. Totally worth all the miles on both ends.

We had a great time exploring some indoor and outdoor spots for her senior photos. Of course she made my job easy, being that she could probably knock on some Hollywood door and become a model overnight... But that aside, I thoroughly enjoyed our evening (and my two assistants - thanks Sarah and Kimber!) telling stories, laughing at weird guys, swatting mosquitoes and playing in the river.

Yet another baby's first year come and gone! There was no shortage of proofs from this session! Jackson has been a great subject for all his sessions - newborn, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and certainly didn't disappoint for his one year session!

As always, it's a blast to watch these little ones grow from tiny wiggly newborns into toddlers - ready to run at the drop of a hat!

I need to mention that I *love* the fact that my job involves getting babies to make the most GIANT mess that they can, then I get to leave. Love it!!

Another birthday baby! Brielle just recently turned one and we celebrated her birthday session up at Hyalite Canyon in Bozeman. I love having relationships with people that benefit everyone involved. I recently met a very talented mom at the Farmers Market. She makes these adorable (and brilliant!) hair clips and headbands for girls. I started chatting and (long story short) we decided to make a trade! It's working out especially well for me since I lost all my baby girl headband/flower props when I moved... So she gets some fun images of her hair flowers in use on some super cute models to display at her table at the farmer's market, and I get some headbands to start my collection again! (And some free advertising, which is priceless!)

Did I mention that having a new friend in a new town is also priceless?! Thank you again for the trade, Jenny! I'm loving it! (...and next we need to get some pictures of those YUMMY and beautiful cake pops!)

I've learned over time that sometimes the best photos come when people are at their most relaxed. Usually what that means is that some of the best images come from the last 20 minutes of a session, after everyone's had a chance to get used to me and my camera in their face. It can also mean that the best shot you'll get of a teenage boy just *happens* to be with his baseball cap on. Not off. Because that's how he's most comfortable with himself. Case in point, a couple of great looking teenage kids with a wonderful mom. She's Antoinette, of Antoinette's Hair and Make-Up Studio in Bozeman. Not only is she a great mom, but she does a mean cut and color. Oh, and she's the only place in town that stocks Bare Minerals (as far as I know).

It's finally here! The last chapter of our move from Bozeman to Helena! YAY!

As I prepare to unplug and pack my computer away, I'm overwhelmed with the excitement of a new beginning. I love surrounding myself with creative people. I also love surrounding myself with people who have followed their dreams and made their lives exactly what they want them to be. My friend, Maranda Lee is one of those people. We started our creative journeys at about the same time shortly after our youngest kids were born (my baby girl and her baby boy were born three days apart!) and have just blossomed into something we never imagined was possible.

Maranda is the brains and magic (she does it all, from design to sewing to marketing and sales...) behind maranda lee - the original Hot Mama Handbags. She started making bags that were functional and fun for new moms, but it's become so much more than that. I got to spend the morning last weekend with one of my baby's first year babies. Lilly is so sweet, curious and WIGGLY! She's been a little wiggle worm since her three month session, and it hasn't changed yet! We spent a couple beautiful hours up at Hyalite Reservoir, dodging snow piles left in shady spots, and soaking up the sun! I can't wait to see these guys again later this summer for Miss Lilly's birthday.

Here's another family that is close to my heart. I grew up with them, and have many fond memories from church plays, and various childhood activities. Now here we are, both grown up (although it felt like we were still 12 when we got together!) with beautiful girls of our own. Time sure flies.

I've learned through the time I've been doing Baby's First Year sessions that 9 months seems to be the one they have the least patience for. I was in and out in less than an hour with Jackson, but still came away with some completely adorable images!

He looks like such a little man in his argyle sweater vest -- and so serious to boot!

Love all the props this family has to incorporate in his photos. We tried to make the firetruck work for his 6 month session, but we had to be patient and let him grow into it a bit more. Sure enough, it's perfect now!

Take a look back on Jackson's first year: 6 months, 3 months and newborn. He seems to be one of those babies who looks like himself right from the start -- he hasn't changed much at all in his face that I can see -- other than it getting chubbier and cuter each time! See you again this summer for the big ONE!

Phew! It's been a while! I'm currently living in limbo between Bozeman and Helena, but at least I have a place to hang my hat until we close on our new house, and a computer to get some work done! I did a couple sessions while I was in NY, and one here in Montana the day after I got back. Now that I'm back in the swing of things, (did I mention I came home to a completely wiped out hard drive? yuck!) I wanted to share a few images from what I'm working on now.

I can't even begin to explain how happy this first image makes my heart. I grew up with this family -- and was honored to take their photos while I was recently visiting my hometown. And for a Dad who *claimed* he wasn't interested in getting his picture taken, I tend to think otherwise when I see this one:

Baby Sam offered me another first today -- a cuddly, sleepy 5-month old baby! To be fair, he was 11 weeks preemie, so more along the lines of a 3-month old in size, but ohmygoodness....... he slept like a newborn! Wait, he slept better than he did at his newborn session!

What a pleasure. I look forward to seeing him three more times through his first year!

Off we go! Our adventure begins now... You might as well cut off my arm rather than pack away my computer, but I guess I don't have much choice. We're moving out of our condo this weekend and moving on to the next chapter. I'll be away from Montana for the next couple weeks, then back in Bozeman for a month or two before we finally make our way to Helena.

She just keeps getting sweeter (despite the fact that she *knew* today was the day for pictures and opted not to nap for the occasion...) We still pulled some smiles out of her.

As I book more first birthday sessions, I wanted to give folks an idea of a way to make some super fun memories out of this occasion! Of course we start the session with clothes on and some more *formal* (read: non-messy) shots, but then we break down to diaper and cake for a cake smash! This is one of my favorite things to do with little ones! They love it, mom loves it, I love it, and you get a freshly washed baby immediately after the session ;)

Keep this in mind for your baby's first year session, whether it's a stand-alone booking or the culmination of baby's first year program with me!

Storyboards are a great way to commemorate the experience from start to finish!

This square storyboard can be printed either as 16 or 20 inch.

Another popular size is 10x20 -- this can contain between two and four images from the session.

Confession time: I have a new favorite all time photo, and it's not of my own daughter. {gasp!}

Miss Ally and I celebrated her birthday a little late after recovering from a cold, but as they say, good things come to those who wait! We spent the first half of the session getting some more formal shots, then stripped her down to her diaper and let her go to town with a cake smash! I have to apologize - I didn't even get a "before" shot of her with the cake! There was no holding her back --as soon as her mama put her down, she was on that cake - literally!

Sugar and spice and everything nice. That's what little Ally is made of!

Oh, for the record, this is the new favorite.

I say it a lot -- babies tell so much through their eyes. They may not have many words yet, but WOW. These eyes have a lot to say!

I truly adore watching my babies grow up! OK, they're not my babies, but given that I get to visit them every three months through their first year, I feel like I have some connection to them. It's so fun to anticipate each session and see how much they've grown and changed since last time I saw them.

Case in point, little Miss Lilly. Nothing but sweet. The same beautiful smile since the beginning. You'd never even know she was battling a cold this day, because every time I looked at her, she just smiled! See for yourself: Lilly at 3 months and as a newborn.

I try to always capture baby parts in addition to their beautiful eyes and faces. (Confession: baby belly buttons are my all time favorite baby part).

And of course, major props to Dad, a.k.a. baby wrangler. I couldn't do what I do without parents lending a helping hand along the way!

I cannot believe my baby is Four. FOUR! A couple years ago, I was adamant that she get into a preschool, because I knew we needed time apart. She is very strong willed, independent, and pretty much smarter than I. Well, I drug my feet and never got her in anywhere, and now I can't believe that next year she's actually going to be in Kindergarten. Now I'm kind of OK with spending the next year with her and her antics, knowing that all too soon the opportunity to spend time doing puzzles, reading books, cuddling on the couch and generally anything that involves me being OK will be long gone.

I intentionally left the camera at the house this afternoon when we took our girls out to a nearby field to fly a kite so I could actually play with them and enjoy the moments rather than have the camera at my eye the whole time. I try to do this as often as I can (which is not very often) and it actually throws people for a loop. Maybe that's a sign. Anyway -- as soon as we got out there, I knew the no-camera thing was a mistake. So I sprinted back home, grabbed the camera and ran back. So glad I did.

My girls often don't get the attention from my camera that my clients receive. They get crappy snapshots in poor lighting. Those memories are fine for the photo album, and I don't expect every shot of them to be perfect, but MAN it's great when I do get some truly beautiful images!

The little one was pretty excited watching the kite takeoff!

So all babies are cute, right? That's just a given. In that respect, I totally have the best job in the world. (Well, in a lot of respects I have the best job in the world...) Especially happy babies. LOVE six months, because babies are so flippin' happy now! Jackson did not disappoint in that respect.

But you know what makes babies even *more* irresistible to me? Chunks. Lots and lots of baby chunks. Again, Jackson does not dissapoint! This baby just keeps getting better and better!

He's getting cuter every time! Here he is at 3 months and at his newborn session. He just keeps getting better, right?!

We hadn't gotten a shot of him yet with his Grandma -- until now! What a lucky family to have so much love.

This adorable little guy was a first for me! He was due on January 25th, which would make him about a week and a half old when we had our session. However, little mister Sam decided to make his appearance almost three months ago! He gave his parents a big surprise in November when he decided to meet them, but he is totally healthy and perfect! I kept going back and forth in my head while preparing for this session regarding what to expect -- a newborn or an almost-three-month-old?

Well, regardless of what I expected, perfection is what I got. A perfectly sweet little guy who wasn't quite into sleeping as a newborn would be, but so full of sweetness that I didn't mind!

Congratulations on your perfect little bundle, Jessica! It was my pleasure to spend the morning with you both, and I hope I get the opportunity to have Sam as a model again!

Zoe's Turning Two | Bozeman MT Child Photographer

I've been putting off my own baby's second birthday portraits for a couple weeks now, mostly because I really don't want her to turn two. If I had my way, I'd cancel her birthday and she'd stay *just* like this for eternity. She is just so cute, so funny, so cuddly... Alas, I cannot stop time. But I can make a bunch of really big canvases and hang them on her walls and never update them.

I always have the hardest time taking my own kids' photos. For whatever reason, either I get stressed or frustrated, the kids are sidetracked, I can't get their attention..... the list goes on and on. But this morning, I had the awesome Barbel Morten of Barbel Morton Photography by my side helping me out. Mostly she kept the big kid distracted and encouraged fun faces from the little kid, but she also got a taste of what it's like to photograph little ones on very little sets. Just a bit of a challenge, eh? I can't thank you enough for hanging out with us!

I've only scratched the surface and picked some early favorites. Cannot wait to get to more tonight!!

One benefit to doing my 365 project for 2011 is that I *always* have my camera with me. I used to often find myself somewhere looking at something beautiful wishing I had my camera nearby. Tonight was one of those times as I was driving home after disappearing for a while for a couple house showings. I almost forgot that I didn't have to miss it! I was able to pull over (safely) and jump out to get a couple shots of this amazing sunset.

What really gets me sometimes here in Western Montana isn't just the sunset to the West, but generally if I turn around and check out the Eastern sky it's just as amazing.

Wow! Little Brielle is just as sweet and quiet as the first time I met her at four weeks. She is still a petite little thing with the same rosy colored peach fuzz hair! What a doll! She and her mama are just as kind as could be.

Par for the course, she was a little apprehensive when we first started -- lots of very curious looks that were SO adorable!

But then she brightened right up and flashed those big blue eyes at us -- didn't take much to melt my heart!

We put her to work modeling some new fluffy diaper covers -- she did beautifully!

And she gave me a new favorite baby shot. Love it!

I know kids grow fast, especially their first couple years. It always amazes me how I look at older pictures of my girls and wonder where the time has gone with they're not even in kindergarten yet! That's one reason I am so happy when parents ask me to photograph their baby's first year. The changes in these little ones every three months just blows me away.

I met Liam the first time when he was about a week old. He gave me a run for my money, but looking back I still can't get enough of his little wrinkles! A few months later, his mama and I met at Lindley Park for an outdoor session. He was even cuter than the first time. By the time he was six months old, he was already figuring out how to get himself around! And now, at 9 months, he's even more of a charmer and SO aware of what he wants!

He's been giving me this look since day 1:

But all it took was some of his daddy's antics to get him to flash me that big grin!

I couldn't resist the whole ET thing when I saw all his adorable friends in his nursery. What a lucky guy to be surrounded by so much love!!

As much as I adore photographing kids and babies, it's nice to have a reprieve every once in a while! I headed up to Springhill Pavilion on rather overcast day to tromp around in the snow with a very fun, very handsome couple.

Par for the course, we started out a little shy... I try to get the posed shots out of the way so that my clients can really get comfortable and open up and just be themselves. Nothing wrong with a stolen kiss or two along the way...

I think men generally expect photo sessions to be rough. For whatever reason, men usually come with a little apprehension about the whole process. I got a wonderful compliment from Fred at the end of our time together: "It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be." I'll take that :) And I'll take this genuinely happy moment.

I learned during our time together that Fred and Tracie have never had professional photos taken -- not even at their wedding! With that bit of information, I encouraged them to think back on their time together and remember the younger days of their relationship.

When we met, Tracie told me the only thing the location had to have was a split rail fence. I'm not sure that this is technically a split rail, but I think it made the cut.

And no, I couldn't resist the Marlboro man pose against the fence while checking out the Scottish Cattle (I think?!)

The love between these two is so evident -- I followed them around for about an hour and a half and ended up with far more images of them laughing, gazing into each others eyes, and just enjoying each other than the posed, looking at the camera and smiling shots. I'm happy about that.

I figured since this was the first, and maybe the last time they had professional photos taken, I'd get a couple individual shots. Love 'em.

Happy New Year!

Throughout the past few days I've been thinking a lot about my first full year in business -- the good, the bad, the must-work-on stuff, the stuff that needs to change, the stuff that needs to stay the same... I've been organizing and restructuring. But above it all I've been thinking of all the wonderful people I've met; all the amazing families who called on me to capture moments that otherwise would have gone by with the wind. It is because of each and every one of you that I am here today, thankful for every client, every image and every memory I've made. So thank you.

And with that, I pulled together a few of my very favorite images of the year.

It's always fun for me to capture images of fellow photographers. A bit nerve-racking at first, but the more I get into it, the more fun I have. In this case, friend and fellow photographer Deea Paul of Deeapaulitan Photography asked me to capture some family images on Christmas Eve. I get all warm and fuzzy just thinking about it -- to have family together is one thing, but to have family together for Christmas is even better. It gives me a glimpse into my future as a mother - what it's going to be like when I'm done with the diaper-changing chapters and moving into the adolescent and teenage years... It's kind of a frightening thought for me, but if my kids have an ounce of the respect, self-worth, friendliness and kindness of these kids, then it might make it a little easier.

Merry Christmas, Paul family. It was my pleasure to be with you on this very special day. You have SO much personality and spunk - it was so fun and easy to be with you all.

We had a great time exploring the back alleys of downtown Bozeman - and found some super fun spots!

Dad suggested that we get some quick images of mom with each of the kids. Us momographers have this problem -- since we're always the one behind the camera, there is a serious shortage of images of US. Good idea, Dad!

Good thing the laughter and fun times (and coffee and occasional warm-up in the car) kept us cozy warm :)

Little Miss Elizabeth is getting more and more edible each time I see her! I am just blown away by this beauty - I can't get enough! A summer solstice baby, I first met her for her newborn session in June then again for three months in September. Her six-month session was on winter solstice, her six-month-birthday, a beautiful sunny day. I can't help but want the next three months to hurry past so I can see her for her next session!

How could you not want to gobble her up, all dressed in sherbert?! YUM!

I love that her mom can't get enough PINK! We joked that someday our girls will want to wear all black with black lipstick and mascara... so by george make them dress in pink now!

I've come across a number of photographers who are less than thrilled with 3-month baby sessions. Some say that you can't "do" anything with them at this age since they can't sit up, but you can't pose them like when they were newborns. Oh, how I beg to differ! Three months is one of my favorite ages for photo sessions! The gorgeous eyes, the big gummy smiles, the myriad baby parts... LOVE three months! And little Miss Lilly did not disappoint! You may remember her from her newborn session - just as tiny and sweet as ever, and only getting more adorable with time.

Mmmm... a triple shot -- toes, fingers and belly!

Yes, we had to. 'Tis the Christmas season, after all :)
